The Pattonville Board of Education on Feb. 5 voted to select Dr. Tim Pecoraro as its next superintendent, effective upon the retirement of Dr. Mike Fulton, Pattonville’s current superintendent. The vote followed an announcement by the school board in December that Fulton would not seek an extension to his current three-year contract, which ends June 30, 2020. At the time, Fulton’s date of retirement was unknown. Recent events have made the date of the superintendent succession now clear. On Feb. 12, the Shawnee Mission Board of Education approved Fulton as its next superintendent. Fulton will retire from Pattonville on June 30 and assume his duties in Shawnee Mission on July 1.
“Pattonville is fortunate to have exceptional internal talent, which is why we decided to select our next leader from within the Pattonville school family,” said Board President Jeanne Schottmueller of the selection of Pecoraro to be Fulton’s successor. “Dr. Pecoraro brings with him a strong dedication to ensuring all children learn. He has a wealth of experience in leading innovative change that makes a difference for children, and we believe he will carry forward the tradition of excellence and innovation that makes Pattonville the extraordinary school district it is.”
A 1989 Pattonville graduate, Pecoraro has served as Pattonville’s assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction since 2007. He has worked in Pattonville since 2001, when he was named principal of Briar Crest Elementary School. Prior to coming to Pattonville, Pecoraro served as assistant principal and fifth-grade teacher at John Weldon Elementary School in St. Charles County. He has also been active at the state level, having co-chaired the Missouri School Improvement Program (MSIP) 6 Academic Achievement Development Team. He currently serves on the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) Technical Advisory Committee. Pecoraro holds a bachelor’s degree in special education from the University of Missouri-St. Louis and a master’s in education administration from Lindenwood University. He completed his doctorate degree in 2007 from Saint Louis University.
“I’m truly humbled and honored to be selected as Pattonville’s next superintendent,” Pecoraro said. “Pattonville is a special place with outstanding students, involved parents and dedicated staff. I look forward to collaborating with the Pattonville school family to maintain the district’s high standards and work hard to meet the needs of all our students.”
Fulton has worked with Pecoraro throughout his career in Pattonville.
“Dr. Pecoraro will do an outstanding job. His deep understanding of the Pattonville community and proven leadership means our Pirate ship will keep sailing on course,” Fulton said in a letter to Pattonville parents and staff. “My wife Katy and I, along with our children Heather, Nathan, Melissa and Laura (all Pattonville graduates), will forever hold Pattonville close in our hearts. We are so fortunate to be Pirates and join you in beaming with pride for our Pattonville community. Thank you for allowing me to serve. I look forward to a strong finish this school year and to the great leadership that our Board of Education and Dr. Pecoraro will provide as Pattonville keeps getting better.”
Fulton became superintendent of the Pattonville School District on July 1, 2007. He joined Pattonville in 1995, working as the director and later the assistant superintendent for planning, assessment and research. He then served as assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction. Fulton has worked in education for more than 32 years and was named Missouri Superintendent of the Year in 2016.
